What is a Spinwheel?
A spinwheel, also known as a wheel spinner or prize wheel, is a circular rotating device divided into segments. It has been used for centuries in games of chance, decision making, carnivals, and television game shows to randomly select an option under a fixed pointer.
The Mechanics of a Spinwheel
At its core, a spinwheel functions on simple rotational mechanics. When torque is applied, the wheel rotates around a central axis. As it slows down due to friction, a static pointer or clicker (known as a flapper) interfaces with pins along the outer edge. This interaction creates the classic clicking sound and eventually stops the wheel, pointing to a single winning slice.
From Carnivals to Digital Screens
Historically made of wood and metal, modern spinwheels have gone digital. Virtual spinners use mathematical random number generation (RNG) and canvas physics to recreate the weight, momentum, and friction of physical wheels. SpinLuck uses custom animations and canvas elements to provide a realistic digital spin wheel experience right in your web browser.
